RV Water Pump Not Working: Safe Checks in Order

Diagnose no water, a pump that runs continuously, low pressure, or rapid cycling using simple checks before replacing parts.

Before you begin: Use your RV and component manuals for model-specific procedures. Stop and use a qualified professional for electrical, propane, structural, or other work beyond your training.

Why does the RV water pump run but deliver no water?

Confirm the fresh tank has water, winterizing and drain valves are in operating positions, and the accessible strainer is clear under the pump manual. Turn the pump off if it runs dry or cannot build pressure.

Keep this record: Record pump model, fresh-tank level, recent winterization, switch behavior, and cycling interval.

First identify the symptom

No sound from the pump, a pump that runs without delivering water, and rapid on-off cycling suggest different checks. Confirm the RV is using the fresh tank and pump rather than city-water hookup, and verify the tank has water.

Turn the pump off if it runs dry, leaks, or will not build pressure. Extended dry running can damage some pumps.

No sound from the pump

Check the pump switch and the relevant fuse or breaker using your RV manual. Some systems have more than one switch or a controller. If the fuse opens again, stop and have the electrical fault diagnosed.

Do not bypass a fuse or bridge pump wires. Work on pump wiring and controllers belongs to a qualified person.

Pump runs but water is weak or absent

Confirm the tank level, look for an open winterizing valve or drain, and inspect the accessible pump strainer for blockage using the pump manual. Air in a recently drained system may require the manufacturer’s priming procedure.

A leak on the suction side can admit air without showing much water on the floor. Check visible fittings, but do not run the pump indefinitely while searching.

Pump cycles when no faucet is open

Check for a dripping faucet, running toilet, water-heater relief discharge, or damp fittings. A pressure drop can trigger the pump even when no fixture is intentionally on. Turn it off when unattended until the cause is found.

If no external leak is visible, a pump check valve, pressure control, or hidden plumbing leak may need service. Document the timing of the cycles for the technician.

After the fix

Run the pump only as your system manual directs, inspect accessible joints under pressure, and record the part replaced. If any plumbing was opened, follow the RV’s sanitation guidance before using water for drinking.

Manufacturer manuals & further reading
