Before you begin: Use your RV and component manuals for model-specific procedures. Stop and use a qualified professional for electrical, propane, structural, or other work beyond your training.
Use the exact generator manual
Find the generator model and specification letter, then look up the operator manual. Starting procedure, fault lights, maintenance intervals, and fuel requirements vary. Do not use a procedure for a similar-looking unit.
Never run a generator in an enclosed garage or near openings where exhaust can enter the RV. Confirm working carbon-monoxide detectors and keep the exhaust path clear.
No crank versus crank but no start
If the starter does not turn, check the model’s enable switch, battery indication, and displayed fault code. If it turns but does not start, note fuel level, recent storage, temperature, and whether another fuel-fed appliance works. Some installations prevent fuel pickup below a certain tank level; the threshold is model specific.
Stop after the attempt limit in your manual. Repeated cranking can drain the battery or overheat the starter.
Starts and then stops
Record how long it runs and any fault code. Low oil level, fuel supply, overheating, or a control fault are possibilities, but a code and inspection are needed to narrow the cause. Check fluids only as the operator manual permits and on a safe, level surface.
Do not bypass shutdown protection or run the generator with missing covers. A technician should diagnose repeated shutdowns.
Prepare useful service information
Provide the unit model, serial number, fault code, fuel level, battery condition, date of last service, and exact start behavior. If the unit has been stored, mention when it last ran under load. This helps a service shop test the right system instead of guessing at parts.
